A THEORY ON HOW THE BROTHERS CAME TO AMERICA

Over the years, we have searched through libraries and geneology centers throughout England both in person, via email and the Internet.  Uusing what we know (some would say: "what we don't know") following is a theory about the parents, birth place and voyage of Elisha and Robert Parker.

Using the Seal of John Parker of Sibertsworld, Kent, England
It is well documented that Elisha and Robert came to the new world "using the seal of John Parker of Sibertsworld, Kent, ENG." We know that Sibertswold was an Ancient Parish in the county of Kent, in England. It was also known as Shepherdswell and it was part of Dover.
Sheperdswell, England
Letter from Jim Fisher: "I can't be at all certain, but I would think the most likely explanation is that John Parker was their father. I also think it very likely that he died before they left England, since otherwise they would not be carrying his seal. My suspicion, therefore, is that they were orphans when they were taken across the Atlantic by whoever was caring for them, and that they were entitled to use their dead father's seal. The seal was a very personal item used to authorise documents - roughly the equivalent of a witnessed signature today. It also suggests John Parker was a person of some importance to have had a seal. Nothing definite, you understand, but that's what seems to me the most likely explanation." Regards, Jim Fisher in Luton, Beds., UK.

The Rev John Lothrop's Wifes.
We can not find any ship records or manifest documenting the arrival of Elisha or Robert Parker to the new world. We do know that the ship Griffin arrived in Boston September 18, 1634 with the Rev John Lathrop from Kent, England. The ship sailed from England with about 100 passenger. However, after extensive searching on both sides of the Atlantic, the only "Griffin" documentation available lists 41 passenger. A search of EVERY ship manifest arriving from the Mayflower to 1655 fails to show either Elisha or Robert's name.

The Rev John Lothrop, his wife and seven children are listed on the Griffin's manifest as follows:

Rev. JOHN LOTHROP from London    (settled in) Scituate
Mrs....... Lothrop
Thomas Lothrop
Samuel Lothrop
Joseph Lothrop
John Lothrop
Benjamin Lothrop
Jane Lothrop
Barbara Lothrop

Note: At least one transcriptions 25) : the manifest shows Mrs Ann (?) Lothrop. This is not possible because: John Lothrop married Hannah Howse in 1610. In 1633, while he was still in prison, Hannah Howse died. John did not marry again until February 16, 1635/36 in Scituate. There is confusion as to the last name (Hammond?) of his second wife; in most available data, she is known only as "Ann"

Since the Griffin sailed in 1634, the question is:
WHO IS LISTED ON THE MANIFEST AS MRS.....LOTHROP?

The Children of Rev John Lothrop

Most published reports say that his first wife bore him 9 children and his second wife bore him 6 more children. 25) There are 7 names on the manifest and 7 names in this Timeline before Hanah's death.

NOTE: some information in this file is not proven

The question remains:
WHERE ARE THE OTHER TWO CHILDREN BORN BEFORE HANNAH'S DEATH?

A note: Somewhere in my one foot high pile of documents, there is a reference to the fact that Elisha's mother was with him in Barnstable in 1639. We are looking to find that reference so we can publish the source.

Now, when this webmaster first became interested in the Parker family history, my Mom, (Olive Ellen Parker) warned me that I might regret finding out how her family came to the "new world." She had heard, numerous times, over the years that at least one member of the family boarded the ship in England without the proper paperwork and had assumed the identity of someone who had died and, therefore, had no problem disembarking in Boston. For years, we looked at this sequence of events as affecting a "male" Parker and that the person with the proper paperwork had died on board the Griffin.

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT ELISHA AND ROBERT'S MOTHER, WHOSE HUSBAND HAD RECENTLY DIED, ASSUMED THE IDENTITY OF HANNAH HOWSE, WHO, HERSELF, HAD JUST DIED AND WITH HER TWO SMALL SONS CROSSED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AND THEN MIGRATED WITH THE REV JOHN LOTHROP TO BARNSTABLE?

If the above rational is to hold water, then we have a lot more research to do. But at least it's a logical theory until proven otherwise. Your webmaster!
